About Us

At Zen Fight Club, we primarily study Shorinjiryu karatedo, a modern style of karate, created in Japan, shortly after World War II, and now practised around the world. It combines elements of Shaolin kung-fu and Japanese karate, incorporating punching, kicking, striking, throwing and holding techniques. It is a full-contact style, which means we spar with bare hands and feet, but wear protective equipment for our torso and head. This is an effective–and safe–way to practise techniques in a realistic fighting situation.

The motto of Shorinjiryu karatedo is “Spiritual development of individuality in mind and body.” Ours in a holistic approach to training mind, body and spirit. We strengthen our mind and spirit through meditation, study and developing a respectful attitude for ourselves and one another. We condition our body with vigorous physical warmups, drills and mastering traditional forms (kata and kumite). And we all progress at our own individual pace, building on our strengths and overcoming our weaknesses.
